It is normal for your mouth to feel sore after wisdom tooth extractions. Most people recover fairly quickly and are back to feeling like themselves within just a week or two. In the meantime, though, you might find it challenging to get enough sleep. What can you do to enjoy some shuteye while you are recovering? This blog post offers helpful tips.
Keep Your Head Elevated
When you lie flat, blood can collect near the extraction sites and increase pressure in your mouth. That extra pressure can make throbbing worse and disturb your rest. Use two pillows or a wedge pillow to keep your head above your heart. This position can support circulation, reduce swelling, and help you stay more comfortable through the night.
Side note: If you received heavy sedation during your procedure, you might need someone to keep an eye on you as you sleep throughout the first 24 hours of your post-op period, particularly if you have gauze in your mouth. The last thing you want is a choking incident.
Take Pain Relievers
Soreness can keep you awake, especially during the first few nights after your procedure. Take any medication exactly as your dentist or oral surgeon directs. If you use an over-the-counter option, choose one your care team approves. Ibuprofen tends to work well. Try to take it at the recommended time before bed so it can provide relief when you need sleep most.
Create a Comfortable Sleeping Environment
Your bedroom can affect how easily you fall asleep. Keep the room cool, dark, and quiet so your body can relax. Place a glass of water, extra pillows, and any approved medication within easy reach. You may also need to ask your family members to be extra quiet so you can fall asleep without distraction.
Apply Ice
A cold pack applied to the side of your face can significantly reduce swelling and may make it easier to fall asleep. Use it for 15 – 20 minutes at a time. (Do not fall asleep while it is on your face — overexposure to cold can cause tissue damage!)
Follow Other Instructions from Your Dentist
Your dentist may give you care instructions based on your procedure and health history. Follow those directions closely, whether they involve dietary limitations, oral hygiene measures, or anything else. Do not smoke, use straws, or ignore signs of trouble such as heavy bleeding or severe pain. Adhering to these steps will reduce the risk of dry socket, a painful complication that could certainly rob you of sleep.
Sleep may feel difficult right after wisdom tooth extractions, but a few smart steps can make the nights easier.
