Clearly, anxiety is a nationwide issue that demands our attention. Indeed, everyone feels anxious from time to time \u2014 however, for some individuals, anxiety presents a constant struggle.\r\n\r\nRecent research indicates a close link between sleep deprivation and anxiety, as well as a connection between sleep disorders and anxiety. In this post, we will take a look at some of the relevant studies. It is possible that for some people, improving the quality of their nightly rest could lead to improved emotional health.\r\n\r\n<!--more-->\r\n<h2>Research Reveals a Connection<\/h2>\r\nAt the annual meeting for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfn.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Society of Neuroscience<\/a>\u00a0last December, sleep researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, shared the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national\/health-science\/poor-sleep-can-be-the-cause-of-anxiety-study-finds\/2018\/11\/09\/9180ea10-e366-11e8-ab2c-b31dcd53ca6b_story.html?noredirect=on&amp;utm_term=.09e48383a367\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">results<\/a>\u00a0of their fascinating anxiety study, which tracked the anxiety levels of 18 individuals. After either a night of no sleep or a night of sleep, the participants took an anxiety test. The results? The anxiety level of sleep-deprived people was 30 percent higher than that of those who had slept the previous night. On average, the anxiety levels of the sleep-deprived individuals were on par with those who had been diagnosed with anxiety disorders.\r\n\r\nIt is common knowledge that those who suffer from anxiety disorders often find it difficult to sleep, but this study shows that the relationship between sleep and anxiety is a two-way street. A sleepless night can cause anxiety, and, in turn, anxiety can rob a person of sleep.\r\n\r\nThe study also included functional MRI scans of the participants. The scans found that in the sleep-deprived individuals, the brain areas that control emotion showed more activity, and the part of the brain that fights anxiety had diminished activity.\r\n<h2>Anxiety and Sleep Disorders<\/h2>\r\nLogically, since sleep deprivation can cause anxiety, sleep disorders \u2014 which negatively affect the quality and quantity of sleep \u2014 can also contribute to anxiety.\r\n\r\nA\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4061640\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2014 study<\/a>\u00a0on the correlation between anxiety, depression, and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) examined 178 adults with OSA. The study revealed that more than half of the participants suffered from some degree of anxiety. The results also demonstrated that the anxiety levels of patients with OSA was higher than in the general population.\r\n<h2>What Can You Do?<\/h2>\r\nIf you suffer from sleep problems and anxiety, it may benefit you greatly to seek professional care.
